11月13日 Guitar plans updateWell i have a bid placed on a loaded telecaster body on ebay, i don't really need a fully loaded body as i have bought a set of pick ups off ebay, 2 humbuckers and a single coil (pictured) but it will cost less to buy a loaded body than buy the body and the other fittings like the controls plate, jack socket, strap buttons & scratch plate. So i will have parts to sell on after i.e. the pick ups & tail plate. i already have the neck, tuners and trem unit (pictured) as for the single coil pick up this i will use on my existing telecater to replace a damaged neck pick up. When i get all of the requirred parts i may just build the telecaster up and try it out for tone etc before i make my mind up if to hollow it out or not.
10月30日 Guitar updateWell its been a long been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. <Name the song and band bonus point for which album it came from. Answers on a £20 note.
Guitars; well i now own 2 strats! 1st one is the one featured on earlier blog. My 2nd is built up of the parts i owned, got given and bought. The Body i had owned for some years and bought for £25, over the years i had toyed with various ideas, natural wood (walnut) to an aborted purple. Pic below during the stripping stage and the finished result. It plays damn good as well, other parts Neck donated free, decals £4.50, loaded scratch plate £12.50, trem unit £10, Big F neck plate £15, big F tuners £15. I also now own a Telecaster neck donated free (thanks Tom) i have a Floyd Rose trem unit that was fitted on my original strat copy, set of tuners. I now need a body looking on ebay for a cheap telecaster body as i want to hollow it out and fit the Floyd Rose trem, electrics wise i'd like to go with a set of humbuckers but this may be a little too expensive so i may just look for a cheap loaded tele body to hollow out. Method will be simple, i'll just hollow out for the back with a router then fix a skin over the back with filled and sanded it won't be visible. Not sure if to cut "f holes" into the front, too many ideas and too much time on my hands.
5月22日 Musicians, forum knobheads and Marlin GuitarsI was doing a search online for some information on a certain make of guitar, "Marlin" they made copies of popular ones like the Stratocaster etc. they also made thier own versions, i used to own a "Marlin Sidewinder" Strat based shape but instead of the 3 single coil pic-ups, the Sidewinder had twin active Humbuckers, it played like a dream so much so i had it poached from me by my mate Tom who fell in love with it after borrowing it to try out on a gig. I didn't mind it was too good of a guitar for a drummer to own, Tom still owns it and plays it regularly on gigs.
So anyway i had come across a Marlin bass guitar it was copied off the Fender Precision or the Fender Jazz however the Marlin had 4 controls and a selector switch i checked on ebay none for sale so i googled it, no images and the net was mainly full of references taken from forums. i clicked on a few links and ended up reading stuff from forums, what a bag-o-shite these idiots type, some guy had posted a question regarding a Marlin Strat copy, i.e. quality of build, performance, and all these so called musicians ripped it to shreads slamming the Marlin as nothing but rubbish and telling the guy to throw it in the nearest skip. i doubt most of these idiots have never even held a Marlin guitar let alone played one, at the end of the day you could give the cheapest made guitar to the likes of Ritchie Blackmore and he'd play it and make it sound brilliant, hand these forum snobs and knobheads a custom built Fender Strat with Roland pic-up and gold plated strings and they'd play the intro to "Smoke on the water" (wrongly by stumming barre chords where as Ritchie plucks the strings). Anyway this Marlin question was still active in this forum so i signed up and posted a response, telling the guy that as long as it tunes up and plays like a guitar the name on the headstock is not important, and is probably better built than a lot of "name make" guitars, knocked up in some sweat shop in the back of beyond and have Fender slapped on it and a price tag to match, i told him about my "Sidewinder" and told him don't ask a forum full of snobs about budget price guitars.
Needless to say the forum page lit up with comments demanding to know what guitar i own, so i listed off my collection, which shut some of them up but some knobheads still wouldn't accept that Marlin could make a guitar worth playing so i told them of my Marlin Sidewinder and how a guy who owns an original 60's Fender Strat fell in love with it and bought it off me, they couldn't get their collective rock filled heads around this, so i asked the question, ok be truthful who on here has actually ever played a Marlin? None of them! People read stuff and log it in their heads they over hear conversations but never actually check things out. It reminds me of the time "Dream Team" came out the movie starring Michael Keaton i was in work telling someone how funny it is when Joe jumped in on the conversation "its just a rip off of "one flew over the cuckoos nest" i asked why so? Well its just is its the same story line, "hmm apart from both being based in a mental asylum i couldn't see any match, "have you seen it?" i asked, yeah, ok tell me the story line, he couldn't basicaly he'd not seen the film its just what he had heard or read.
Paying top money is no guarantee for anything, i own a Pearl export drum kit, its a mid price drum kit but i love it, prior to that i owned an Aria Royal kit, which is a budget price drum kit, but with time and know-how i had that kit sounding just as good as any. Now some years ago Tom asked me to go along to watch his band rehearse and see if i could give their drummer a few pointers, i went along the drummer had a "Drum Workshop" kit, now a DW was the big thing at the time kits ran in £1500 upwards, having said that, this kit sounded shit, he had taken it out of the box set it up and started to play, the snare was a million miles away from being set up correct, add to this the kid didn't have a clue about drumming, Tom introduced me to the kid and said "if you need any advice Pauls the man to ask" the kid just blanked me so i left him to it. Tom asked me what i figured on his playing, i said to Tom, in truth, hes a waste of time, he has no feel for drumming and is too arrogant to ask advice. Fair play to the kid he was trying to do things right paying for drum tuition trying to read drum music, but when your playing covers of the Shadows songs its all about feel. 4月25日 Another new guitarWell i had a look around for the parts for my Strat copy, found the body and the neck, few other bits, sadly the neck is bolloxed so made my mind up just to buy another, well i went on eBay spotted a few then this add caught my eye "buy now £110 brand new copy inc hard case" so i clicked and got one to say i'm amazed is an understatement the guitar is a near perfect copy in natural wood head stock left blank to make a good look alike.
In the mean time my mate Tom heard of my original strat copy needing a new neck and called round with one! for free!!! its one he'd had in for ages and didn't need anymore, and wouldn't take a penny for it, what a guy.
Question is do i fit this onto the new Strat copy? 4月11日 room update and other updatesRight, Room; decorating done, floor laid, down lights fitted, full wall shelving unit built, temp desk being built (i'll change the top at a later date).
Guitar update; i bought a "Freshman" acoustic guitar its a beauty i've called her Marilyn as shes blonde, beautiful and a great shape.
i have a full week off and i've found all the bits for my bass guitar, and my strat copy, i think its time i rebuilt these.
End of updates.
new pictures to be posted soon. 3月1日 Still here, are u?Well been away from this space for a while, where have i been? friggin around on facebook, wasting my life away, working, more work and so on.
My son moved out into his own place and at the moment i'm making plans for what to do with his room, its looking favorite that i'll be moving my study in there the attic is great just too cold in winter too hot in summer, at the moment i'm stipping the walls, dismantling the computer desk i built for him all those years ago. Plans include rewire for the sockets and lighting i want split lighting, coloured down lighters but i also want a light/fan for the centre of the room. after which patch up the plaster and decorate and lay new flooring. Question is what i move into there? Computer, guitars, amp, 4 track recording unit, Hi-Fi, massive CD collection, its only a small back bedroom. I have the blockhouse at the side of my house, i built this myself many years ago from 300 breeze block, i've since fitted double glazed windows and a uPVC door (courtesy of Camerons, well whatever contract we where working on at the time) anyway in here i plan to have my drum kit set up, well the electronic kit but via a small amplifer and then i can use my real cynbals. This is for when i get my new 4 track recorder to replace my old faithful Fostex cassette unit i can get back to working on my songs flesh them out a bit more.
I need to find materials for my new computer desk i have some good ideas for building as opposed to buying one and adjusting everything to suit. Theres a unit near our office that cuts granite to size, but as i sit here and look at this desk granite would be a waste as u can't see my desk top for the stuff stacked on here, monitor, speaker system, printers etc. etc. smoked glass? reclaimed oak? i want something different, typical me i can never go the easy route.
My guitaring, well i'm enjoying playing as i have a beautiful 12 string that makes my simple ditties sound so rich, i need as new 6 string acoustic as my old "Encore bowl back" sounds rather poor compared to my Epiphone 12 string, i had a beauty of a guitar "Aria Elecord AE-100" i say had while i was still in the band the guitarist pestered the life out of me to sell it too him and i eventually gave in, i since found out he went and traded it in shortly after prying from my hands, i'm so pissed off about this i never wanted to part with it in the 1st place, and for all my searching i have never spotted another like it.
Right enough of my ramblings i can't wait for my new recording unit gimme something to do apart from sitting here typing and gaming. 12月18日 another boring songi'm talking about Alexandra Burke 1st release, just like Leona before her great voice crap song, Leona Lewis is the queen of morbid boring songs lets hope Alexandra Burke livens herself up and puts out a couple of up-tempo songs as i am sick to the back teeth of Leona Lewis and her "songs to slit your wrist to" . 9月15日 Off to the great gig in the sky
Farewell Rick Wright, for the uneducated Rick was keyboard player/vocalist with Pink Floyd, Rick wasn't the best keyboard player in the world in fact he started off as a trombonist in a Jazz band! but Rick style of Keyboards added to the Floyd sound. YouTube - Pink Floyd - The Great Gig in the Sky 9月14日 Missing parts updateAh spent yesterday clearing my workshop filled 2 bags with stuff to take to the dump with more to follow, I found 2 plastic bags one contained the parts for the snare drum, the other part for my bass guitar. That's a load off my mind I'm still desperately seeking a name plate for my drum, I found a web-site belonging to a guy who renovates stuff for a living so I have emailed him to see if he can help out, fingers crossed. Its not essential I have the name plate its just me and my attention to detail. Well the morning is brightening up and I plan to spend another day out there clearing the workshop I will then break up the cracked flooring dig out the loose stuff and mix some levelling compound and pour it in. I then need to acquire some sheet flooring from work to lay, well you see our contract to refurbish bathrooms has come to a close so the flooring is surplus to requirements so destined for the skip. 9月11日 desperately seeking missing parts...Sorting through my outbuildings i found my old bass guitar and one of my drums i had started to renovate many moons ago, the Bass guitar is a "Shergold Marathon stereo" bass guitar circa 1970's my drum is a Hayman wood shell snare again circa 1970's. The bass guitar was bought from a dealer in a poor state i stripped the body down and had it refinished in white put it all back together time passed and it stuck me i should of had it refinished in its original cream colour so i stripped it down again and prepped it, and got side tracked... eventually it went under the rest of the stuff that migrated into my workshop. The drum was found in a skip by one of our window teams who knew i was a drummer so dropped it in with me, the Hayman snare was a much sort after drum and in good condition could reach up to £300! sadly this one had seen better days and some idiot had stripped off its original finish (leaving the glue on) and gave it a piss poor coat of varnish, along with the loss of its Hayman badge. Again i took it home and stripped it down rubbing it down to the original wood finish shell, again i got side tracked and lost interest.
Clearing part of my workshop uncovered these 2 unfinished projects, the guitar body i have continued to rub down in readiness of its re-spray, the drum has been rubbed down stained in light oak and lacquered it needs another coat of lacquer then levelling and final polish then all the parts can be re-fitted! if i can find them!!! Same applies to the bass guitar, i have the neck and scratch plate, i need to locate the pic-up, control panel, neck plate and jack plate. Oh possibly find a wiring diagram for how to wire up the electrics. For the snare drum i need to track down a name plate, on eBay there's only 2 kits and a pile of bits for sale i have emailed the guy selling the pile of parts to see if he has one i'm tempted to email the 2 others sellers with the kits to see if they want to commit the ultimate sin and remove one of the name plates off their drums for me to buy. 9月7日 Roll up Roll up come see the freaks and mentally unstable!I have a great idea for a TV show we will trawl round the mental institutions and care in the community refuges and get people who are clearly mentally unstable to perform it will be so funny, we can all take the piss out of them rather like the freak shows that used to tour the country or back in days of old when rich people used to go laugh at the inmates of bedlam mental asylum but this will be televised .... SHIT they beat me too it, X Factor! Yep i have never made any secret about my disdain for the so call talent programs such as X Factor, Pop Idol so on and so on. I saw a brief snippet this morning where some poor Scottish woman went before the panel of judges "i want to be bigger than Whitney Houston" she said with a strange and scary shaped mouth that contained a collection of broken grave stones she called her teeth, she claimed to be a singer but sounded like a dog with its balls trapped in the door, the judges don't even bother to hide their laughs anymore and burst out laughing at this poor misguided soul or fool. Every year its the same haul out the mentally unstable and parade them on TV for our entertainment, families are as much to blame its fine to lie to your kids when there little "ooh your very good" when they've just shouted along with the latest record but there needs to come a time when u tell them the truth, let them down gentle, but it seems some make it to their teens and the family still lie or think their little angel has what it takes but no they let them stand up in front of 4 so called talent spotters and get laughed at and make a bloody show of themselves on TV. Who knows what damage it could do to someone to queue up all day to walk in give it your best and be laughed out of the room then realise "that may end up on TV and everyone in the country will be laughing at u as well". I think it was last year a singing bell tent shown up, a teenage girl who was grossly over weight dressed in something resembling a bell tent that made her look 1000 time worse stood there with her family looking on as she gave her best which was piss poor get laughed out of the room. Its sick entertainment we laugh about it when these people should be protected, how long before one of these poor souls walks away and gets pushed over the edge and either tops themselves or takes a knife to someone .... now that's something we could televise ..... Roll up Roll up see the loony top themselves! 8月27日 Salvaged £400 doorJust love it walked round to our window and door unit today, spotted 3 doors lined up, Tony said "you want a door Paul?" ok whats the catch? there was none, Shaun said "you'll need handles and a lock" no problemo, i phoned home my son measured the opening for the shed, spot on, in the meantime Tony had a mooch round and found handles, lock even a letter box, ok a bit excessive for a shed well not really its built of breeze block and i fitted double glazed uPVC windows years ago when they too where heading for the skip. So i got it home tonight and set to work ripped out the old one and set about fitting my new uPVC composite door. Wifey despairs "the bloody shed has better windows and doors than the house" is her saying. The shed i built myself some years ago i bought 300 breeze block bags of sand and cement and with the only building experience previous of building was an irregular garden wall! i set to work and up it went during a hot summer, wifey was my girlfriend in those days you used to call round with lunch and check on progress. Spook my fantastic tomcat used to walk along each new layer of the wall as it went up, i said he was clerk of works and checking the standard of work as he would pause near where there was a gap in the breeze block and sniff it. Later this year i plan to empty the shed out and dig the floor out and re-lay it as it was back filled with waste mortar/sand/broken breeze which due to the sand content soaks up the water. I then have plans to build my own little workshop for my little hobbies, i told wifey i may move the computer into there and have it my own little hide away. All she had to say was "well make sure u have an intercom as i'm not running out into the yard every time i want to ask you something" good to know i'll be missed! To tell the truth the more i think of it the more sense it makes. Tom's funeral tomorrow i've been asked to say a few words and i'm nervous about the idea, crazy really i work as a dj and have done discos to 500 ppl with no problem nervous this time as i'm not sure if i'll be able to keep my emotions in check. 8月25日 SadnessBeen a little down lately Tom my ex father in law passed away, Tom was a great guy and like a 2nd father to me. Strange really as i was only married to his daughter for a couple of years i was still treated like one of the family. Lucille was greeted with open arms by Tom and his wife Kath as part of the family and we looked forward to visiting them and enjoying a good old chin wag Tom and me talking of cars and past work experiences, Lucille and Kath having a totally different conversation. The saddest thing of all is after years of struggling to make ends meet as the kids grew up they had just become comfortable and enjoying life. Tom could turn his hand to most things, photography having his own dark room back in the 70's/80's car maintenance, a bricky by trade could could carry out most building works. But was enjoying retirement and getting to grips with the computer and loved printing off pictures he'd taken. Linda my ex has asked me to say a few words at the service, i have been composing a little something to say, i just hope my emotions hold together while i read it out. 8月10日 MemoriesMooching through a box of memories last night i found some stuff that jolted me into thinking about life. 1st thing was a picture of my dad taken 1959, my dad passed away age 42 i only had 10 years with him and i felt cheated that this great man should be taken away from me, i recall it hit me again when i turned 42, thinking damn this is the same age my dad passed away. I mentioned it to my brother at the time he's older than me and he confessed he had the same thing pass through his mind. I found some old photos of me one as a child, then one as a long haired youth in 1977 looking like i wanted to be a native American (a red Indian for the ignorant). Other items Premium Savings Bond bought for me back in 1962 for a £1 when a pound was a big investment, what a crock, today its still worth £1 but who knows it may be a big winner in the big draw. My original NHS medical card with the address changed from our 1st house 20 Farm Road a place i had a few near misses sliced open my hand needing stitches, my brother and sister getting my little finger trapped in a wooden roller mangle and getting knocked off my 3 wheeler bike by a run away milk float, all before the age of 3. Various tickets collected from clubs i have played in with my band Hard Ground cost of ticket £1 with added "be early night is sure to be sold out" heck how popular where we? I recall one concert secretary saying "i know if you lads are on i can add 50 more people to the room" and we didn't take them along, we where a bloody good hard working club band and we had fun. Also in the box a mountain of charity pins, u know the type most are still in the packs i did have a photo frame with loads stuck into card backing. A sticker that tells me i was in room 1013 in the Sinai Hotel Tel-Aviv, this is from 1989 when my Aunt Veronica paid me to visit Israel, i loved it and always said i would return one day. Train tickets from the 1st train ride i took with Lucille (my wife) we had a day out in Manchester 21/2/96 also here tickets from our 1st concert we went together Blackmore's Night Buxton Opera House24/9/01 and most eye opening item in my box of memories is a pony tail of my own hair cut off when it was still a beautiful auburn brown, natural i must add. 8月3日 Works updateSo what's happened since my last update? Well patio furniture arrived and as part of the course the sun hasn't shone since! Luckily it come with a waterproof cover. In my lock up I've added more shelves as I filled up the ones I built, i try to do an hour or so a day to keep the work ticking along. I need to get some stuff out photograph it and stick it on eBay, loads of car parts etc. I am working my way down the container and can almost see the back wall of it! There are shelves already in there I built when I 1st bought it, these contain surplus disco equipment old hi-fi's, Capri parts its a regular Aladdin's cave or Fagan's den depending which way you look at it. Good thing its secure being made of steel and being designed to spend its life as a site office has a good steel outer door with tamper proof lock box, 2 things I need to sort out is the inner door for on the days I'm working in there and want to have the door shut I have one with glass panels so it lets some light in and the window in the side which due to its age is in a poor state, luckily again it has a steel shutter to keep it secure but i want new unit uPVC double glazed, priced one up £149, not bad. Being converted to be a site office its lined out in plywood with insulation, it also has electrics fitted 2 tube lights and 2 double sockets, regular home from home. Right time to sign off and get something done.... I'll be back. 7月29日 i love it when a plan comes together, thunder and lightningHaving spent 2 weeks break attempting to work on my house and garden but due to lost days where the weather turned sh!t and prevented me even starting some jobs before my return to work, back in work i sat and pondered did a quick sketch gathered what materials i needed from our "due to go in the skip" surplus stock, i headed home cooked a mean chilli-con-carne then set about my lock up at the bottom of the garden. The lock-up is an 18 foot converted shipping container i bought for £500 some years ago, which is used for hoarding stuff and a store for stuff wifey doesn't want in the house, so after eating my killer chilli i got the materials from the back of the car cleared a corner of my lock up and set to work building a work bench, which is something i have promised myself for a long long time. i worked up till 8 in which time i had it completed, next job is to install shelves above the bench to store all my power tools etc.
Had a nice long cooling shower then chilled for the rest of the night, before heading for bed with a vodka and pure orange to read before heading off for Mumu land.
5am i was woke up by a brilliant thunderstorm i stood at the window and watched the sky being lit up by the flashes and a few seconds after the clap of thunder. I do love thunderstorms i can stand and watch them for hours, rain bounced down and flooded the roads etc. thunder and lightning moved off so i got back into bed to re-visit Mumu land for a few hours. 7月21日 Jobbin' part the 3Just completed a days toil shovelled 2 tonne of chipping's completed the back and had enough to redo the front picked up some more materials; bamboo screen, hose pipe and spray attachment. Took my Capri out on a photo shoot "ah yes the cars the star" gave 406 a wash so it didn't feel left out. Trip to the local skip yard tomorrow with all the rubbish. The flags are black slate but need a coat of sealant to bring the finish up. 7月20日 jobbin' the part IIWell a more productive day jigged all the flags around see new piccy still not 100% sure may turn some to set as diamond shape. Well chippings arrive tomorrow barrow and shovel at the ready Seal (wifey) and my son David making up the team, by the end of the day my already long arms should be a few inches longer ..... (thinks) "maybe i should use another part of my anatomy "
The bits Seal doesn't know about; The slab wall is to disguised using a bamboo screen
Tune in tomorrow for more exciting updates. 7月18日 Lost days2 days rain this is not helping i have a sh!t load of work to do all on the outside of the house, and rain is not something i need. The great British summertime ... yep the rains a lot warmer. If anyone recalls the words to "this ole House" well that sums up this property. 7月16日 Jobbin' the part 1OK, set about the disaster area that is called the patio of my yard. pic 1 shows what a holy mess it was
2 tonne of stone chippings arrive Monday (gold mix) this will be laid in all the gaps between the flags and none flagged areas. Well a hot bath calls me to relax and then chill out for the night.
